The Legend of the Wally Painting

For those of you who are coming to the stadium to enjoy Opening Day, you'll notice many new additions to the stadium. None may be more noticeable than the mural of Wally the Watertower on the concourse ground right through the front entrance. One of our own interns displayed her artistic creativity in this lifelike portrait of our beloved Wally. But, did you know that the history of the Wally painting is riddled with dark secrets?

The Wally painting was actually never meant to be. He was the result of lackadaisical placement of a can of red paint. Inside a tarp on the concourse was this mythical can of paint. An unsuspecting employee went to move the tarp, in a misguided attempt to be helpful. The result, red paint spills covering the concourse cement. None felt the tragedy closer to heart than Stadium Steve, our respected Stadium Operations Manager. How could something like this happen the day before Opening Day? Yet, as it is written, the show must go on, and thanks to a bright young intern with a hand for art, it will.

The Wally painting is quickly becoming a favorite among locals who cherish the rich history of the Florence Watertower. And so ends the legend of the Wally painting.
